FANK
PROJECT
Initiated
by artist Emma Herman-Smith, with Comar, the FANK project
aimed to re-build and repurpose a derelict sheepfold (or
fank in Scots dialect), near Loch Frisa on
the Isle of Mull. Since October 2014 volunteers were invited
to attend a series of community workshops, led by Peter
Holmes, to learn the skills of dry stone walling and to
help rebuild the delapidated structure. Tobermory High
School students also attended one of the dry stone workshops
and an outdoor art workshop held in the fank. The project
was managed by Becky Lewis.
The last workshop was in June 2015 and the majority of
wall has been re-built; the site now links the islands
landscape and social heritage to its cultural present.
Although, sadly, Emma wasn't here to see the project to
its completion it is hoped that a significant number of
her original aims have now been realised. The artist Andrea
Geile was commissioned to produce a piece of sculpture
called 'The Chlorophylls' which now stands in the centre
of the fank.
I worked with Emma on the Forest Partners project so was
very pleased to be asked by Comar to document this project.
